Why the Old Rules for Winning at Work No Longer Apply

Listen On…

In Episode 08 of FreshMinds, Mitch Simon sits down with Ronen Gafni to tackle a question every listener eventually has to face. What made you successful up until now might be the exact thing holding you back next. This episode is about spotting the old game you are still playing without realizing it, and what the new one actually looks like.

What Makes a Podcast Worth Listening To Now

Ronen opens with an observation that applies far beyond podcasting. Content that simply delivers information is losing relevance fast, because AI already does that well. What matters now is content that raises new questions and reframes how people think. The same shift applies to your own work. If you are only delivering answers, you are competing with a machine. If you are provoking new thinking, you are doing something only a human can do.

The Old Game Was Never Actually Collaborative

Mitch and Ronen dig into something most companies say out loud but rarely practice, real collaboration. Ronen shares a story from consulting with a company planning its one big annual global gathering, built around the theme of collaboration. His first question was simple. How do you actually measure collaboration? The honest answer was that compensation still rewarded individual KPIs, with only a loosely connected company wide bonus layered on top. In other words, the incentive structure was still built entirely around personal wins.

Measuring What You Actually Want More Of

Ronen argues the real shift companies need to make is rethinking what gets measured. In FreshBiz, part of winning is helping other players win their own game. He asks a pointed question every leader should sit with. Does anyone track how many people you helped hit their goals this year? If not, you are still playing the old game no matter what values are printed on the wall.

Small Dynamic Teams Over Fixed Departments

Ronen introduces a structural idea for organizations moving forward. Instead of rigid departments where people rarely interact outside their lane, he envisions small, flexible teams that form around a project, deliver results, and then reform around the next one. Knowledge, creativity, and talent move fluidly rather than staying locked inside silos that were never designed for how fast things now change.

The Loneliness of Managing Bots

One of the most striking moments in this episode is Ronen’s warning about a possible future. If your primary skill becomes managing digital agents instead of connecting with people, you may technically be productive, but you risk becoming deeply isolated. He compares it to standing alone next to a machine on a factory line a century ago. The antidote is intentionally building roles and cultures around human connection, not efficiency alone.

Are You a Dreamer, Builder, or Consumer

Ronen shares an idea sparked by something he saw about AI models that were overtrained until they stopped recognizing patterns and started merely memorizing sequences. He draws a parallel to people who only consume information without ever contributing anything new to the system. His challenge is direct. Are you feeding new ideas into your organization, or are you only pulling information out of it? The people who will matter most going forward are the dreamers, the builders, and the makers, the ones introducing something that did not exist before.

What to Actually Do With the Time AI Frees Up

This episode returns to a theme from earlier conversations with real specificity. Ronen shares his own small practice. Every time he sends a prompt to an AI tool and it takes a few minutes to generate a result, he steps out onto his balcony instead of immediately opening another task. He treats that recovered time as sacred, not as a gap to fill with more work. His challenge to companies is blunt. If AI is genuinely saving you time, prove it by giving people that time back instead of quietly loading on more.
