Employee Burnout is Real! – Secrets to Motivation and Retention

Burnout is real. It is officially identified by the World Health Organization as an occupational phenomenon. At the root of burnout are broken and unfair policies, and it can’t be fixed by wellness and meditation practices. That’s like putting a bandaid on a failed artery.

In today’s podcast, we have Jennifer Moss, the author of the Burnout Epidemic and Unlocking Happiness at Work. To prevent burnout, Focus on Controlling the Controllables 

We have to move forward and understand that there are things that we can be doing. We can control the controllables. When you look at virtual and remote teams, there’s a lot that we gain because there’s flexibility. A lot of people really like the ability to manage their own time because it feels more effective for them.

However, we are swinging the pendulum too far. As a result, we’re losing fun. We’re over collaborating. We don’t need this much collaboration. Teams don’t need this much time on Zoom. We need to start pulling back and figuring out how we can use our time better. 

Create Relationship Depth, not Breadth

As managers in leadership roles, we should act as conduits to creating depth and bonds within smaller teams. The focus should be on creating meaningful interactions, not breadth. Leaders need to become “professional eavesdroppers” in order to find what makes their people tick. By doing so, they can create opportunities for their team members  to speak up and share what needs to be done. The relationships created from this have more substance as opposed to simply meeting with a bunch of people and leaving with no real connection.

The Big Shift in Leadership Today – Identifying Burnout

Some leaders today are finding it hard to be empathetic with their people. The change in work dynamics is changing so fast that the  failure to adjust is resulting in  high-performing individuals leaving their organizations. “They don’t call in sick. They’re calling in quit”.

Senior executives are left with big gaps to fill and it takes a long time to figure it out. They see this vacuum of people following suit. And they need help in figuring out how to do things differently because of the paradigm shift.

We’re seeing leaders now asking themselves how to deal with their own burnout, how to become a more empathetic leader, and how to help others in a way that doesn’t totally drain themselves. 

Burnout is a REAL Problem 

Burnout is a real problem in the workplace. It is not an individual problem but an organizational problem wherein everybody needs to participate. However, we cannot deny the fact that leaders carry the most weight in this kind of issue. Leaders should be able to implement sound burnout prevention and wellness tactics that are based on what their people say they really need–the answer is NOT in off-the-shelf remedies that are merely band-aids.
