What Surprised Sunjay Over the Past 2 Years
Through the experience of the pandemic and transitioning to hybrid work, Sunjay Nath has learned that the principles of communication, engagement, building trust, and creating value for customers remain the same. However, the manifestation of these principles has changed as physical interactions have been replaced by virtual ones. He emphasizes the importance of staying adaptable as patterns will continue to change. The core principles will remain, but the lessons learned will constantly shift in form.
What is the 10-80-10 Principle?
Sunjay Nath explains the 10-80-10 principle, which suggests that any group of people can be divided into top 10%, bottom 10%, and majority 80%. The principle suggests that the top 10% are inherently motivated and must be empowered to role model top behaviors, while the bottom 10% should be neutralized—and then the majority 80% can follow the top leads. Nath provides examples of how this principle affects human behavior in various situations, including live performances and presentations. He also suggests that focusing on the individuals who are willing to participate and engage can yield the best results in education and other fields.
Empowering New Behavior in Hybrid Work Teams
Sunjay Nath discusses the challenges of transitioning to a hybrid work model and emphasizes the importance of authentic communication and engagement to empower employees. He suggests replicating in-person activities online and creating opportunities for frequent one-on-one conversations with team members. Sunjay also recommends focusing on outcomes and taking action to help employees feel better about their work, particularly those who may be struggling to perform at a high level.
The 10-80-10 Principle in Action!
Sunjay discusses how to create an engaging and healthy culture in an organization. He uses the pop bottle analogy to illustrate the concept of organizational culture and the need to create a dominant force for desired behavior. Nath emphasizes the importance of identifying the top 10 people who exhibit behaviors aligned with the organizational culture and neutralizing the bottom 10 instead of focusing on them. He also advises leaders to focus on the desired result, and not waste time and resources on the bottom 10 employees without knowing their underlying reasons. Over time, the positive behavior of the top 10 will become a magnetic force, leading to a natural attrition of those at the bottom.
